Franz Jozef

Franz Josef

The morning sun was out by the time we got up. The first picture is of the ever-present glacier and tourist business in this town. It is all tours and adventure experiences of every kind.

We had our own church service; since neither the RC nor Anglican buildings in town have regular services, ably led by Bernie and Anna. We continue to be in awe of the beauty that is around us and gave thanks again to our creator for it.

At 12:30 we went on a glacier walk and the other posted pictures are of that. The Franz Josef glacier is one of the fastest moving in the world advancing about a foot per day at the bottom. This is because of its steepness and allows it to exist within the rain forest; which surrounds it. The top of the mountain receives some 25m of snow per year; which feeds this glacier. Unlike some other glaciers this one has actually been growing since 1983 after receding since it was ‘discovered’ in the 1750s.

Tomorrow we resume our bike trek northward along the west coast of New Zealand. There is no official internet available in the place we are staying but I will try to post from the hostel’s computer, but no guarantees.
